A China reagiu às tarifas impostas pelos Estados Unidos atingindo um de seus pontos estratégicos mais sensíveis: as terras raras

No embate comercial entre Estados Unidos e China, Pequim acaba de fazer um movimento tático ao mirar em uma área onde o Ocidente é especialmente vulnerável: a das terras raras. Esse grupo de materiais estratégicos, fundamentais para os setores tecnológico e industrial, voltou ao centro das tensões entre as duas potências econômicas.

Mas a resposta chinesa vai além dos impostos: Pequim suspendeu as licenças de importação de produtos de seis empresas americanas e aumentou o controle sobre a exportação de algumas terras raras.

Não é a primeira vez que a administração de Xi Jinping utiliza esse tipo de restrição como instrumento de pressão sobre os Estados Unidos e seus aliados.

Um histórico de restrições e medidas estratégicas

Em dezembro de 2023, a China já havia limitado a exportação de certas tecnologias de processamento de terras raras para proteger seus interesses estratégicos. E no início de dezembro de 2024, proibiu a exportação de minerais críticos para os EUA, incluindo três elementos-chave na indústria de semicondutores (gálio, germânio e antimônio), além de materiais com extrema dureza usados em aplicações militares.
